Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs

FORT DETRICK, Md. - On August 12, Col. Sarah B. Goldman transferred the role of director of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs to Col. Mark G. Hartell.

Goldman began serving as the CDMRP Director in 2020 and led the CDMRP through a historic pandemic and a period of significant organizational change.

“It has been humbling to have led a team so devoted to the critical mission of transforming healthcare for Service Members and their Families, Veterans and the American public,” Goldman said.“The research funded by CDMRP makes a positive impact for those affected by the diseases and conditions directed by Congress and we will always ensure that those impacted have a seat at the table in our process.”

Under Goldman’s leadership, CDMRP underwent the most significant reorganization in decades,ensuring new capabilities to improve program management, creating leadership development opportunities for CDMRP staff and maintained CDMRP management costs at the lowest levels in the 32-year history of the organization.

“We have transformed our organization to be more effective while simultaneously maximizing the amount of funding available for science which gives hope for so many impacted communities,”Goldman said. “CDMRP remains grateful for the trust and confidence that Congress has in our organization, and I’m looking forward to see the positive impact of our research in the years to come.”

In her most recent roles before arriving at CDMRP, Goldman served as commander of the Public Health Activity – Italy, the director of Congressional Affairs for the Office of The Surgeon General and congressional liaison for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army.

Since 2022, Hartell served as the military deputy director of CDMRP.

“I am honored to be a part of the CDMRP team,” Hartell said. “As we seek out new opportunities to best engage our research communities executing our programs, we are also informing our senior leaders of the significant impact of CDMRP efforts on transforming health care solutions for Service Members, Veterans and their Families.”

Before arriving at CDMRP, Hartell served most recently as the chief of staff for the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command and senior support advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response for the Department of Health and Human Services.

Additionally, he holds a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Auburn University.

Lt. Col. Tanekkia Taylor-Clark will assume responsibility as the military deputy director.
